How to Choose Power Bank Capacity

Milliamp-hours are useful, but they do not tell the whole story of a power bank. Buyers should also compare battery voltage, watt-hours, output power, ports, conversion losses, device requirements and the documentation available for the exact product.

Why mAh alone can mislead

The capacity printed on a power bank usually describes its internal battery cells at the cells' nominal voltage. A phone receives power at another voltage through conversion circuitry. Energy is lost during conversion and charging, so the printed mAh figure should not be divided directly by a phone's battery mAh to promise an exact number of recharges.

Use watt-hours for a better comparison

Watt-hours describe energy using both capacity and voltage. When the manufacturer provides rated energy, use it to compare products. An estimated recharge calculation should account for the power bank's watt-hours, conversion efficiency and the receiving device's watt-hours. Treat the result as an estimate rather than a promised outcome.

Match capacity to the campaign

  • Short event or emergency top-up: prioritize compact size, useful output and a connector that fits the audience.
  • Travel or field work: consider greater energy, multiple ports, weight and the devices that must be supported.
  • Laptops or higher-power devices: verify USB Power Delivery profiles and output wattage; capacity alone does not establish compatibility.
  • Broad mixed-device audience: confirm port types, included cables and whether recipients need their own cable.

Capacity is only one specification

Check maximum output per port, total output when multiple ports are used, input charging time, pass-through behavior if relevant, connector type, cable contents and the power bank's physical size. Wireless charging, when present, introduces its own compatibility and alignment requirements.

Documentation matters for lithium battery products

Do not assume that every power bank in a large catalog has the same test reports, transport status or market certifications. Request the documents required by the destination, carrier and procurement policy for the exact item. Confirm that the documentation identifies the product being quoted rather than a different model.

What to include in the inquiry

  • recipient device types;
  • required ports and cables;
  • whether laptop charging is required;
  • destination country and shipping destination;
  • quantity, imprint location and packaging requirements;
  • procurement or compliance documents that must be reviewed.
